5 lessons learnt building a micro-startup
You’re probably asking yourself what a “micro-startup” is. We call Kittysplit a micro-startup because we’re not funded and we don’t make money (yet). We don’t have investors demanding regular updates and we don’t have employees who depend on a monthly salary, hence we avoid a lot of the stress that “real” startups have. Nonetheless, the lessons we learned so far are definitely worth sharing.
One thing that will strike you if you read about startups is that the lessons they deliver often flatly contradict each other. This is because each startup and it’s environment in is unique. It’s up to you, the founder of your own startup, to figure out which lessons apply to your unique situation.
Onto the lessons!
Don’t be put off if your idea already exists
Once you get over the initial shock of discovering that someone has already had your idea, you will begin to work out how you could do it better. Look at your competitors’ products closely and work out what their strengths and weaknesses are.
We were actually a little lax on this front and discovered most of our competitors after we’d already started. I’m almost certain that we would never have made Kittysplit if we had been fully aware from the outset of the range of competing apps and tools out there for splitting costs (here’s a list). In the end, we made yet another tool to join the fray, but we made one that was a little better (we believe) in certain ways.
The take-away here is: focus on a few key things which you can definitely do better than your competitors and you’ll have a good chance. And here’s a bonus tip: if your product is simpler in some important way, that’s already a key step.
Put off burning cash for as long as you can
The moment you start burning cash (i.e. pay yourself a salary, have employees, or pay some other fixed costs) is the moment the clock starts ticking. Once that clock counts down to zero, the cash will either be gone and your startup will die, or you’ll be making enough to take off. Hey, that’s why they call it the runway.
Obviously some startups need an investment to start up at all. It could also be that people will advise you that if you’re not “all-in” you haven’t got a chance.
However, ours’ was a different experience: because we’re a micro startup we have a very long runway which allows us to learn, listen to user feedback and improve our product. The longer you put off burning cash, the longer you will survive and the better your product will be because of it. Which brings us onto the next point:
It’s OK to launch a crappy product
When we launched Kittysplit it looked OK, but it was pretty wonky. The user-flow was weird, it had lots of quirks and it didn’t work on mobile at all. People began using it nonetheless and they gave us feedback which we were able to react to immediately. This was essential to improving our product.
Also, just after we launched, we were looking through our logs and discovered that one of our sisters-in-law had created a Kitty for a hen weekend. She and a number of her friends had used our half-finished product exactly as we had intended, all without any kind of hand-holding. It was an amazing moment: we knew that we had the basics right. To put it another way: our core assumption had been validated. From then on, we listened to our users and implemented the features they asked for. This is an excellent way of building the things that matter and not getting side-tracked.
Of course, none of this is new. These issues have been examined at great length in the Lean Startup movement. What was great was experiencing first hand that it actually worked.
Agree on who does what and how much of it. Then write it down
This is particularly important if you’re starting off part-time. Because here’s what will happen: you and your team will be full of vim and vigour at the outset. You’ll be excited about the new market opportunity you’ve discovered and how in the next few months you’re going to absolutely nail it.
Then reality sets in. Things take longer or don’t pan out. Disappointments happen. And slowly some of the team will lose interest. Maybe they’ll have other priorities, a difficult client or trouble at work. They’ll do less and have less time. Resentment will begin to accumulate and then things can get ugly very quickly.
To avoid or at least mitigate this scenario, have an honest discussion right at the very start. Define who is responsible for what and – very importantly – how their success is defined. Success in this case can be time-based or goal-based. Then write it down and send it to everyone. It’ll be a helpful basis for difficult discussions that will happen later.
Learn to code
Anyone can learn to code. Really! The number of tools, courses and interactive platforms for teaching yourself to code is growing every day. That doesn’t mean that anyone can code a Java backend module or write a CSS animation that depicts bouncing balls. But anyone can learn how to use Github and make a few changes to an HTML or a resource file. With just that knowledge, you’ll be able to edit texts on your website, tweak a landing page or move a button.
If you’re serious about launching a startup, there’s no excuse for not being able to make basic changes to your code. You’ll increase your effectiveness in the team immediately, reduce your dependence on others and just be able to get more shit done. It’ll also be an amazingly fun and fulfilling adventure.
